You may not get plastic utensils and condiments in your takeout anymore
The extra but convenient plastic cutlery, chopsticks and sauce packets that restaurants throw in your takeout bag may soon disappear for good as New York City’s City Council has just passed a bill that would bar eateries and food delivery services from providing this accouterment unless specifically requested.
Those businesses that keep including these items regularly, would be subject to civil penalties but warnings, instead of a monetary penalty, would be given for any violation occurring before July 1, 2024. The hope is to cut down on single-use plastic that can’t be recycled and ends up in landfills and take away the financial burden of purchasing these items from small businesses. Every year, more than 320 million tons of plastic are consumed globally, with 95% of plastic only used once and 14% for recycling.
The Dorchester hotel in London has a brand new James Bond-inspired bar
Following a big-money renovation, Park Lane’s historic 1930s Dorchester hotel has opened a brand new cocktail spot, the Vesper Bar. The newly reopened ground floor of the luxe Mayfair landmark includes the brand new Artist’s Bar – complete with Liberace’s legendary mirrored piano – and a swanked-up Promenade area, but The Vesper Bar is one for the real spy heads.
Formerly home to the acclaimed Bar at The Dorchester, the new space has been whipped into shape by Stockholm-born Martin Brudnizki, the interior designer behind the lavish Annabel’s as well as various Soho House ventures. Head bartender Lucia Montanelli will be on hand to whip up classics and house specialities, including, of course, the Vesper Martini – popularised by James Bond author Ian Fleming in his 1953 novel ‘Casino Royale’.
Singapore to host Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant 2023 on March 28
For the past three years, the coveted Asia 50’s Best awards have been strong-armed into revealing the winners online or via limited broadcast from Bangkok (2022). But on March 28 2023, things are about to change. In line with the 10th anniversary of the award, celebrations are coming back in full swing in Singapore. It’s a full circle moment, as the Lion City hosted the very first edition of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants back in 2013.
Aside from the red carpets and bubbly, this year sees the first Asia iteration of 50 Signature Sessions, a collaborative dining series that spotlights international chefs and local talent. Foodies can expect to revel in highly curated gastronomic experiences between March 25 to 29, some even one-night-only exclusives.
