New in Mumbai: Flurys’ First Tearoom Outside Kolkata Blends Seaside Charm with Nostalgia

Decadent rum balls and rich, chocolaty shortbread. Delicate cucumber and chicken sandwiches alongside flaky mutton puffs. For those of us who grew up in Kolkata, Flurys is more than just a tearoom—it’s a part of our lives. From family breakfasts to first dates, we’ve all enjoyed their muffins, cubes, Yule logs, and fruit cakes. Birthdays and Christmases often featured their iconic bubblegum-pink frosted cakes or succulent plum cakes from the flagship location on Park Street. Flurys is an iconic institution, symbolizing a legacy of treasured memories. Despite the city’s myriad trendy restaurants, people still queue up every day to visit the beloved Park Street location.

After nearly a century in business and previously only opening kiosks across India, the Swiss bakery recently launched its first Flurys Tearoom outside of Kolkata, right here in Mumbai. As someone with cherished memories of Flurys, I was indeed skeptical about visiting the new tearoom in Mumbai doubting their ability to capture the nostalgic essence of the original. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this tearoom, rather than trying to imitate the original’s appearance, truly embodies its spirit. In a city where culinary trends come and go, Flurys Tearoom stands out as a timeless gem. It captures the essence of its storied past while embracing the vibrant energy of Mumbai.

Ambiance and Decor

Situated on the steps of the Sea Palace Hotel, the new Flurys Tearoom captures the timeless elegance and design of the original. It offers seating for approximately 100 guests, with both indoor and outdoor options. The interior showcases plush seating and soft lighting, with walls adorned with Flurys memorabilia, blending nostalgic charm with modern comfort. For those who enjoy a sea breeze with their pastry, the outdoor area provides stunning views of the Arabian Sea, making it an ideal setting to savor signature breakfast dishes, chocolates, and coffee in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Food and Drink

Flurys’ Legendary English Breakfast

The eye-catching pink and white logo and packaging draw you in to enjoy their delightful offerings, whether you take them to go or savor them on the spot. The menu features beloved classics that evoke a sense of nostalgia, along with new additions to cater to Mumbai’s tastes, including a variety of vegan dishes.

The full English breakfast reigns supreme.  It includes both bacon and sausages, baked beans, sunny side up eggs, hash browns, toast, mushrooms, roasted tomato, and a choice of tea or coffee. This breakfast also comes with a fruit bowl and juice, providing a refreshing complement to the rich fare. Other hearty options include the Eggs Benedict, which features poached eggs on a bed of sautéed spinach topped with a decent Hollandaise sauce, Bhetki Florentine, Rosemary-Marinated Grilled Chicken, Fish and Chips, Lamb Chops and their heritage Beans on toast and Mushroom on toast. There’s also a wide variety of signature sandwiches and pastas.

Among the standout offerings is the French toast, made with freshly baked in-house milk bread. It achieves the perfect balance of a satisfyingly crisp crust and a delightfully soft interior.

For those seeking healthier choices, Flurys provides an array of options such as plates of assorted seasonal fruits, granola bowls, and shakshuka. The vegan breakfast replaces the traditional non-veg items with masala-scrambled tofu, sliced avocado, and vegan cheese spread, and offers almond and soy milk as alternatives.

The coffee is quite good, and the tea selection is impressive. From classic Darjeeling and Assam to exotic blends like Earl Grey, each cup is brewed to perfection, ensuring a delightful experience with every sip. Guests might be pleasantly surprised to discover that the tearoom also offers a range of alcoholic beverages with Flurys’ signature style, including espresso martinis and Irish coffees, available until the tearoom closes at midnight.

Desserts and Confectionery

The takeaway confectionery menu is extensive, featuring classics such as Rum Balls, Strawberry Cubes, Almond Cubes, and Chocolate Boat. The Rum Balls offer a burst of flavor with a subtle non-alcoholic rum essence that enhances the creamy chocolate. The Strawberry, Almond, and Chocolate Cubes are just as enticing, dissolving pleasantly in your mouth. You can also enjoy Macarons and a variety of freshly baked items, including croissants, cinnamon rolls, and breads like milk, sourdough, and garlic. The cookie selection includes flavors like chocolate chip, raisin and spice, and ginger, while the chocolates range from truffles to dark and white varieties, available in gift packaging or small pouches. For savory options, the menu features delectable choices like Spinach and Corn Quiche, Chicken and Mushroom Quiche, and the Classic Chicken Patty, all of which are truly delightful.
