For the third year in a row, Kolkata has been declared as the safest city in India
If reports are to go by, for three years in a row, Kolkata has successfully maintained its status of being the safest city in India. It is important to note that this is as per a report published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The NCRB report reveals that Kolkata has registered the lowest incidence of cognisable offences per lakh population among major Indian cities. Following closely are Pune in Maharashtra and Hyderabad in Telangana. Cognisable crimes, for those unfamiliar, pertain to cases recorded under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special Local Laws (SLL).

This ranking, based on a comparison of 19 major cities in India, all with populations exceeding 20 lakh, underscores Kolkata’s status as the safest city. However, it’s crucial to understand that this doesn’t imply a zero crime rate, as the city has experienced an uptick in crimes against women, as reported.
So, what does this mean for domestic and international travelers?
While no city can claim to be entirely crime-free, Kolkata offers a glimmer of hope to travelers seeking a relatively peaceful environment compared to other cities. The city’s notably low levels of violent crime stand out as a reassuring factor for any traveler.
Kolkata’s iconic landmarks, including the Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, and the Maidan, not only represent its rich history but also serve as safe and welcoming spaces. The ability to explore these popular tourist destinations with family, friends, or even as a solo traveler becomes a gratifying experience, especially for first-time visitors. The city’s effective law and order situation fosters a comfortable atmosphere for tourists and individuals to gather at public places without fear.
