Juicy souvlaki, a warm plate of moussakas, or a lamb being roasted on a spit – that’s what we pictured as a Greek meal before we visited Greece. Although these make up a considerable part of the modern Greek diet, however the average daily diet of a Greek will almost always consist of some sort of vegetarian food throughout the day, so much so that these days there are numerous Vegetarian Food Tours. So it was but obvious to book ourselves on a walking food trail to explore Greece’s vegetarian scene while being in awe of sheer cliffs that soar above a turquoise sea in Santorini where food is quite the preoccupation, and with numerous sea-facing restaurants that stay open late to serve Mediterranean fare and a range of delicious local beverages. Here’s a sneak peek into what we had today in Santorini.
Fried Saganaki – Simply put this popular appetizer among Greeks is fried cheese drizzled with honey and sprinkled with sesame seeds.
Dolmades – Grape leaves stuffed with rice and herbs, usually marinated in lemon juice and served cold. They are so addictive – you will find yourself wanting to order seconds.
Horta – Up for detox? The seasonal greens -or in Greek, Horta-, are so dense in texture and flavor that it feels like a meal in itself. The slight bitterness is perfectly contrasted with lots of lemon juice.
Fassolakia Freska me Domata – This is a wonderful dish made with fine green beans in a rich, tomato sauce. Make sure you order some bread to mop up the juices.
Tahinopita – Traditional treat during the Lent period in Greece, this sesame cream cake bakes up light and high with walnuts and golden raisins, dusted with a bit of powdered sugar.
