When Nalini Sadhu (the moving force behind Matamaal) – Delhi’s celebrated authentic Kashmiri Pandit cuisine restaurant) first started to master the nuances of Kashmiri Pandit cuisine many years ago, little did she know that what started as a simple desire to cook delicious authentic Kashmiri food for her family and guests, would one day become a full-blown business that would introduce Delhiites (and Indians) to the hidden treasure of lip-smackingly delicious Kashmiri Pandit food. Encouraged by her husband and her friends (who were also her biggest fans), Nalini and her husband Surinder set up the first eatery at Gurugram (then Gurgaon) as a humble twelve-seater. Within 4 years, it has grown to a space that can accommodate 60 hungry guests, and yet there is a queue outside on any given day.
Nalini’s vision is providing the best representation of Kashmiri cuisine and culture to the world, which is just as particular as she is passionate and fiercely protective of preserving the true taste and tradition of authentic Kashmiri Pandit cuisine. Little wonder that, in spite of getting several requests for franchising their brand, she took her time and, only after finding the right partner, has taken her first steps to take Matamaal international. Matamaal is scheduled to open its doors in Doha (Qatar) this September, subject to permission from the authorities keeping in mind the situation arising out of the pandemic.
To make the experience for guests in this restaurant totally immersive, Nalini and her partners have designed the restaurant with mesmerizing interiors that best represents the valley and its people. “With this sea-facing, fine-dining experience, in downtown Doha, we are ecstatic, to again represent Kashmiri cuisine in a new light, that showcases new tastes and experiences of our culture, like never before,” says Nalini.
