A major food hub in Newton, Singapore, the Newton Food Centre has been a cornerstone of Singapore tourism, and for a good reason. Famed Gordon Ramsey’s battleground during SingTel Hawker Heroes challenge and on top of the to-do list of every adventurous tourist looking to score some authentic Singaporean food, this place received its deep recognition thanks to the internationally acclaimed Crazy Rich Asians. If you have watched Crazy Rich Asians, you’ll know that one of the first things Rachel and Nick (the main protagonists) do after arriving in Singapore is head to the hawker stalls with their friends Colin and Araminta. Hard to peel me from the bubbling love story, but I could feel my mouth watering as they showed steaming bowls of laksa, delicious chili crabs, and sticky satay skewers. The move from stall to stall, ordering dishes after dishes, as I googled to the location to realize that some of the stalls listed in the Michelin Guide! Heng with its delectable fried carrot cake and oyster omelet, Alliance Seafood with its barbecued seafood and black pepper crab, and Ah Gong Traditional Hainanese Chicken rice with its chicken rice have gotten international acclaim. From its humble beginnings in 1971, the food center has come a long way with design renovations. There are now more than 50 different species of flowers have been planted around the food center and at the main entrance, making it a perfect place to spend a day or even a date night!
