Is fondue Swiss or French? Well, apparently while the origins might have been French, the ‘cheese fondue’ we all know so well is definitely a Swiss thing. Made from Gruyere or Emmental cheese which is melted in a pot heated held over a slow-burning lamp (that is the traditional way) into which you dip cubes of crusty bread using special ‘fondue forks; which are longer than the regular forks and usually have just two prongs. Sitting next to a nice crackling fore, it is just the right thing to make you feel warm and cozy in the cold Swiss winters – or any winter for that matter. Just thinking of the scene described above makes one feel warm and cozy.
It is believed that way back in 1930, the Swiss came up with the idea of popularizing the cheese fondue as a Swiss national dish too – you got it – increase the consumption of cheese. Sure looks like they succeeded! Because now the whole world wants to eat Swiss cheese fondue, even in non-winter months, much to the amusement of the Swiss.
