India’s winter sports season begins in mid-December and extends until early March, as the Himalayas are covered in fresh snow. You don’t need to leave the country to enjoy the snow or participate in winter sports. Tourism authorities in northern India are making winter sports more accessible, making it easier than ever to plan a snowy vacation.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Skiing is the most popular winter sport in India, offering options like alpine skiing, which involves skiing down a slope, and cross-country skiing, which covers several kilometers.
Snowboarding, a relatively new sport in India, combines elements of surfing and skiing. It is more adventurous than skiing and requires a higher level of skill and practice to master.
Both sports require a reasonable level of training, but instructors are readily available at ski spots in Himachal Pradesh (Kullu, Manali, Narkanda), Uttarakhand (Auli, Mundali, Dayra Bugyal), and Jammu & Kashmir (Gulmarg). Gulmarg boasts the best powder snow, while the gentle slopes of Auli and Narkanda are ideal for beginners. The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) organizes winter skiing camps at Hotel Hatu in Narkanda, offering stunning views of snowy valleys and orchards.

The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) provides a similar program at Auli, along with a two-week certificate course at the Clifftop Club Resort (gmvnl.com). Ski lifts are available at Gulmarg, Auli, and Solang near Manali.
For advanced skiers seeking higher, untouched slopes, private operators such as Auli Skiing (auliskiing.in) and Kashmir Heliski (www.kashmirheliski.in) offer heli-skiing experiences in Manali and Gulmarg.
For beginner and intermediate skiers, or travelers who want just a few one-off lessons, equipment such as skis, poles, snowboards, ski goggles, and snow boots can be easily rented at ski shops for a few hundred rupees each.
Ice Skating
Travelers can glide on ice at the skating rink near Shimla’s circular road, which is one of the oldest natural rinks in the country. Additionally, the J&K Ministry of Tourism operates an ice skating rink in Gulmarg. Ice skates can be rented from these venues. While formal training isn’t available at the rinks, beginners can pick up tips from more experienced skaters around them. It’s an activity that’s relatively easy to learn if you have ever tried roller skating.
Proficient skaters can try playing ice hockey at rinks in Leh and Dehradun. The Ice Hockey Association of India organizes learn-to-play programs from December to February each year (www.icehockeyindia.com).
Sledging
For those who prefer not to be standing up, sliding down the slopes on a sledge (or sled or sleigh) is a delightful alternative. It’s a great way to embrace the festive spirit and have fun, especially since it requires minimal training. Sledging is more casual than skiing or snowboarding, and sledges can be rented from ski equipment shops in Manali, Auli, and Gulmarg.
