DAY 02 – KANDY CITY TOUR
- Begin the day with a visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. This revered temple holds immense religious and cultural significance and showcases traditional Kandyan architectural styles, influenced by earlier shrine constructions that once housed the Sacred Tooth Relic in different Sri Lankan kingdoms. Nestled in the heart of Kandy, the temple is surrounded by historical landmarks, including the Ancient Royal Palace to the north, the Udawattakele Forest Reserve to the east, the scenic Kandy Lake (Kiri Muhuda) to the south, and the revered Natha & Paththini Devalaya to the west. With its intricate gold, silver, bronze, and ivory carvings, the temple is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. The Sacred Tooth Relic of Gautama Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamala and Prince Dantha from Kalinga, India, during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Meghavarna (301-328 AD).
- After the temple visit, embark on a sightseeing tour of Kandy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich history and breathtaking landscapes. Located 480 meters above sea level, Kandy, historically referred to as “Kanda Uda Rata” (Hill Country), was the last independent Sri Lankan kingdom before falling to British rule in 1815. During the city tour, visit the Royal Botanical Gardens, home to a vast collection of tropical flora, and explore the Peradeniya University Campus, one of Sri Lanka’s most prestigious educational institutions. Conclude the tour with a panoramic view of Kandy from Upper Lake Drive, where you can capture stunning vistas of the picturesque town and its surrounding mountains.
- In the evening, witness a mesmerizing Kandyan Dance Performance, an art form deeply rooted in Sri Lankan tradition. This national dance of Sri Lanka was preserved within the Kandyan Kingdom, which remained the last stronghold of Sinhalese sovereignty until 1815. The performance features energetic movements, elaborate costumes, and rhythmic drum beats, offering an immersive cultural experience that showcases the vibrancy of Sri Lankan heritage.
- End the day with a delicious dinner before retreating to your hotel for an overnight stay in Kandy.

DAY 03 – KANDY / NUWARA ELIYA
- Begin the day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel, followed by check-out and a scenic transfer from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. En route, visit a tea factory and estate, where you can witness the fascinating process of how the world-famous Ceylon Tea is brewed. The journey also includes a stop at the Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple and the breathtaking Ramboda Waterfalls, offering stunning natural views.
- Upon arrival in Nuwara Eliya, check in to your hotel and embark on an exciting city tour. Known as “The City of Dawn,” Nuwara Eliya is situated at the highest elevation in Sri Lanka, approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, with Piduruthalagala Peak (2,555m) visible from the town. Established by the British in the 19th century, the city is fondly referred to as “Little England” due to its charming colonial architecture, cool climate, and scenic landscapes, making it a popular getaway for both locals and tourists.
- A highlight of the day includes a visit to the Hakgala Botanical Garden, once a pleasure garden of King Ravana. Expanded during the British era, this garden is home to a diverse collection of flowers, including stunning orchids. It is also believed to be the place where Sita was held captive by King Ravana, as mentioned in the Ramayana. This was the spot where she was visited by Hanuman, who brought Rama’s ring as proof that Rama was searching for her. Some remnants of this legendary garden still exist, adding a mystical touch to its natural beauty.
- Continue the journey with a visit to the Sita Amman Temple, located about 15 km away. This sacred temple is believed to mark the exact location where Sita was imprisoned by Ravana. The temple showcases intricate statues, including Kali images, that depict scenes from the epic Ramayana.
- The tour then takes you to Gregory Lake, a scenic and vibrant spot in Nuwara Eliya. Named after Sir William Gregory in 1873, the lake is a popular destination for water sports and leisure activities. Visitors can enjoy speedboat rides, swan boats, pony rides, and cycling along the picturesque pathways. The surrounding park offers various fast-food stalls, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy a snack.
- Another must-visit site is Victoria Park, located next to the Nuwara Eliya Post Office. Originally a research field for Hakgala Botanical Garden, it was formally named Victoria Park in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The park’s first tree, an oak, was planted by a visiting German Princess. With the Nanu Oya River running through it, the park is home to rare bird species and scenic lakes, making it a tranquil spot for nature lovers.
- The rest of the day is at leisure, allowing you to relax and soak in the beauty of Nuwara Eliya at your own pace.

- Visit Ravana Cave & Ravana Waterfalls: Located just 2 km from Ella, the Ravana Cave is steeped in mythology and history. According to ancient legends, King Ravana used this cave to hide Princess Sita after abducting her, as narrated in the Ramayana. Situated 1,370 meters above sea level, the cave also has archaeological significance, with evidence of human presence dating back to 20,000 BC. The tunnels, believed to be built by King Ravana, served as hidden passageways connecting important towns and fortresses. Nearby, the Ravana Waterfalls is one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Sri Lanka, standing 82 feet (25 meters) tall. Originating from the Kirindi Oya, this cascading beauty is part of the Ravana Falls Wildlife Reserve. Local legends suggest that Princess Sita was hidden in a cave behind the falls, adding a mystical charm to this scenic attraction.
- Visit Demodara Nine Arch Bridge: A masterpiece of 20th-century engineering, the Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the “Bridge in the Sky,” is an architectural wonder that connects two lush hills between Ella and Demodara railway stations. Built entirely of stone and cement without steel, the bridge spans 300 feet in length, 25 feet in width, and stands 80-100 feet high. The surrounding dense jungle and rolling hills make it one of the most picturesque spots in Sri Lanka. The best time to visit is when a train passes over the bridge, offering a perfect moment to capture in photographs.
- Visit Kataragama Temple: Arriving in Kataragama, a revered pilgrimage town, you will visit the Kataragama Temple, a sacred site for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and the indigenous Veddha people. The Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya is dedicated to Skanda-Murugan (the Kataragama deity), while nearby shrines pay homage to Buddha, Ganesha, and Hindu deities. The Kiri Vihara Dagoba, built in the 1st century BC, is believed to be one of the places where Buddha visited during his third trip to Sri Lanka. The temple becomes vibrantly alive during evening poojas, where pilgrims gather with fruit offerings in devotion.
Kataragama also marks the end-point of the holy “Pada Yatra” pilgrimage, where thousands of devotees walk for 45 days from the Jaffna peninsula to Kataragama, culminating in the grand Kataragama Festival held during the Esala Poya full moon (July or August). - After an enriching day of exploration, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, soaking in the serene surroundings.
