Sacred Sites – Discover the Temples

Gokarna’s spiritual tapestry is interwoven with captivating myths. The village derives its name, meaning “cow’s ear,” from the legend that Lord Shiva manifested here from a cow’s ear. Situated at the confluence of the rivers Gangavali and Aghanashini, the village itself mirrors this anatomical shape. According to lore, Shiva granted Ravana the atma-linga, symbolizing the essence of Shiva, as a reward for his unwavering devotion. The condition was that Ravana had to transport it from Mount Kailasa to Lanka without placing it on the ground. However, the trio of Vishnu, Ganesha, and Narada conspired to outsmart Ravana. When he paused to offer prayers in Gokarna, Ganesha, disguised as a Brahmin, surreptitiously rested the atma-linga on the ground. Despite Ravana’s attempts to reclaim it, the sacred object remained firmly fixed. Today, the atma-linga is enshrined within the walls of the renowned Mahabaleshwara Temple. This grand granite structure, constructed in the traditional Dravidian style, houses a stone idol of Shiva believed to be 1,500 years old.

Close to the Mahabaleshwara Temple stands the Maha Ganapathi Temple, a site where pilgrims pay homage before advancing to the primary temple. Situated along the L-shaped Car Street, these two temples are positioned in proximity to each other, tracing a route through the village extending to the beach. The festive spirit comes alive during Maha Shivaratri, Gokarna’s paramount celebration, marked by a rath yatra originating at the Maha Ganapathi Temple and progressing along this bustling street.

Located to south of the Maha Ganapathi Temple, Koti Tirtha is an artificial reservoir enveloped by sacred shrines. Distanced from the bustling bazaar, this pond exudes a mystical ambiance reminiscent of Varanasi’s ghats. Positioned atop a cliff, the Rama Temple provides a commanding view of the extensive arc of Gokarna Beach. Pilgrims frequent this site to draw water from the natural spring within the temple grounds, while Carnatic music concerts grace the atmosphere on festive occasions.

Murudeshwara, a temple town in Bhatkala Taluk, North Canara district, Coastal Karnataka, is an hour and a half drive from Gokarna. Nestled between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea on the Mangalore-Karwar Highway, its main attraction is a Shiva Temple with Dravidian-style Chalukya and Kadamba sculptures. The temple, situated on a hillock, features a 37-meter tall Shiva statue, the tallest in India, and a 237-foot gopura, the second tallest in India. The temple complex offers stunning sea views and includes a large Gitopadesha statue in a lush garden.

Explore The Beaches

A path behind the Rama Temple goes up a hill, unveiling the beaches that have etched Gokarna onto the global hippie map. The Main Beach, adorned with its elongated beauty, is now colloquially referred to as the Indian Beach by tourists. Meandering along its tranquil northern stretch is best explored on foot, but for those seeking a more active pursuit, the Cocopelli Surf School on Long Beach beckons.
