There has never been a better time to be a female entrepreneur in travel and tourism; long may it continue.

Across the globe, the rise of women leading start-ups in the travel and tourism sector is nothing short of transformative. In recent years, there has been a clear and significant increase in female-driven ventures that are reshaping the industry.

This movement goes beyond mere representation; it marks a fundamental shift in leadership dynamics and business strategies. Women are not just stepping into roles—they are pioneering fresh approaches, driving innovation, and redefining the travel experience.

In an exclusive interview with Travel and Food Network, Neeti Sharma, Director of Intrepid Marketing and Communications, offers expert travel advice gained from over 25 years in the industry, along with guidance on building a successful career in tourism.

As a leader in the travel industry, what advice would you give to women looking to enter and succeed in this field?

The travel industry is dynamic and constantly evolving, making it a great space for innovation and leadership. I advise women to embrace networking, build strong industry relationships, and stay updated with emerging trends. Confidence and adaptability are key; challenges will arise, but perseverance and strategic thinking will set you apart.

How has your experience as a woman in tourism shaped your perspective on women as travelers and professionals?

Being in the industry has given me a deeper understanding of how women’s travel preferences have evolved. Women today are traveling more independently, seeking unique experiences, and prioritizing safety and well-being. On the professional side, I’ve seen more women stepping into leadership roles, proving that this industry is becoming more inclusive.

How can tourism boards and representation companies foster more women in leadership roles?

Tourism boards and representation companies can drive change by actively promoting gender-inclusive policies, ensuring equal opportunities for leadership roles, and recognizing the value women bring to the industry. Mentorship programs, leadership training, and networking platforms tailored for women can help build confidence and expertise. Also, companies should foster a work culture that supports work-life balance and flexible career paths, enabling more women to rise to leadership positions without barriers.

What impact do women-led travel businesses have on the industry, and are you seeing more female entrepreneurs emerging?

Women-led travel businesses are redefining the industry by bringing fresh perspectives, innovative travel concepts, and more personalized experiences. Whether it’s niche travel, sustainable tourism, or community-driven initiatives, female entrepreneurs are making a significant impact. Women-led travel startups have a noticeable rise, reflecting a shift toward a more inclusive and diverse industry.

What key skills or strategies would you recommend for women aspiring to build a career in tourism representation?

Strong communication, relationship-building, and an in-depth understanding of market trends are essential skills. It’s also important to be proactive in seeking industry collaborations, leveraging digital marketing, and staying adaptable in an ever-changing landscape. Passion for travel, combined with a business mindset, can open many doors in tourism representation.

What have been some of your most memorable trips—both professionally and personally?

Each trip brings a new learning experience. Professionally, exploring diverse destinations through familiarization trips and showcasing them to the Indian market has been incredibly rewarding. Personally, destinations rich in culture, history, and natural beauty hold a special place in my heart, whether it’s the vibrant energy of Morocco, or the breathtaking culture and coastlines of Mauritius.

On this Women’s Day, what message do you have for women shaping the future of travel and tourism?

Believe in your vision, take bold steps, and create opportunities for yourself and others. The travel industry has endless possibilities, and women have a powerful role in shaping its future.
