Mauritius has gained popularity among Indian travelers due to its stunning beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and deep cultural connections with India. What makes the destination even more attractive is the availability of direct flights from major Indian cities such as Delhi and Bengaluru, ensuring ease of travel. Additionally, the visa-on-arrival facility for Indian citizens simplifies the entry process, making Mauritius a preferred choice for both family vacations and romantic escapes.
In this exclusive conversation, Sanjay Dhar, Founder & CEO of Travel and Food Network, speaks with Hurry Krishna Boodhun from Mauritius Tourism. They explore Mauritius’ strategic initiatives to attract Indian travelers and discuss the country’s promotional efforts in this expanding market.
How many tourists visited Mauritius in 2024?
Mauritius welcomed approximately 1.4 million tourists. This is quite significant considering our population is around 1.2 million. We are seeing steady growth and expect to reach pre-COVID numbers soon.
What percentage of your tourists come from Europe?
Around 60% of our visitors are from Europe. Other major markets include India, China, and South Africa.
Speaking of India, what strategies are you implementing to promote Mauritius as a destination for Indian travelers?
The relationship between Mauritius and India goes beyond tourism; it is historical, cultural, and deeply rooted. Indian travelers feel at home here, given the cultural similarities. We are working closely with Indian travel agents and tour operators to enhance our presence in the market. Direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai make it easier for Indian tourists to visit, and we are focusing on increasing connectivity and awareness.
How does Mauritius differentiate itself from other island destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, Seychelles, and the Philippines?
Mauritius is unique because it is a family-friendly destination, whereas the Maldives, for example, is more popular for couples and honeymooners. We offer a mix of adventure, nature, luxury, and cultural experiences, making us an all-encompassing travel destination. Additionally, Mauritius has a diverse range of activities, from hiking and water sports to cultural excursions, making it attractive to all types of travelers.
What is the ideal duration for a Mauritius trip?
Most visitors stay for about 6-8 days, while some extend their vacation up to 11 days. European travelers tend to stay longer, given the long flight distances.

How important is the Indian market for Mauritius tourism?
The Indian market is crucial for us. While the numbers may not be as high as those from Europe, the potential for growth is immense. We see Mauritius as more than just a tourist destination for Indians—it’s an extension of their cultural heritage.
Is Mauritius more affordable compared to destinations like the Maldives?
Yes, Mauritius offers luxury experiences at competitive prices. While we do have premium resorts, we also provide mid-range and budget-friendly accommodations. Additionally, food and activities are reasonably priced, making it a great value-for-money destination.
Mauritius is often considered a romantic destination. Is it also suitable for a family holiday?
Absolutely! While we have been voted one of the top honeymoon destinations, Mauritius is also a fantastic family destination. There are numerous activities for children, including nature parks, adventure parks, and beaches, making it an excellent choice for family vacations.
What unique experiences can travelers enjoy in Mauritius, especially if they are travelling with kids?
One of the most thrilling experiences is walking with lions at Casela Nature Parks. We also offer underwater sea walks, snorkeling, scuba diving, and hiking in our scenic national parks. The island’s rich history and diverse cuisine further enhance the experience.

How easy is it to drive in Mauritius? Do visitors need a special driving license?
Mauritius is a compact island, roughly 2,000 square kilometers, which means you can explore it easily by car. Visitors can use their international driving license to rent a car and drive around. Our roads are well-maintained, and it’s an enjoyable experience.
What are your expectations for tourism numbers this year?
We are aiming to maintain or slightly increase our numbers from last year, which was around 1.4 million tourists. Sustainability is a priority for us, so we focus on maintaining a balance rather than overcrowding the island.
Finally, what message would you like to share with travelers considering Mauritius for their next vacation?
Mauritius is more than just a beach destination—it’s an experience. From luxury resorts and adventure sports to cultural heritage and warm hospitality, we have something for everyone. Whether you’re traveling for romance, family fun, or adventure, Mauritius is waiting for you!
