Whole Foods has officially opened its first online-only store that will fulfill orders for delivery only. The Brooklyn, NY, location is not open to the public for grocery shopping.

Although grocery delivery has seen an expected surge due to COVID-19, this Whole Foods store was already in the works prior to the pandemic. According to a report by USA Today, the delivery-only spot has been planned for over a year now.

Unlike a traditional Whole Foods location, this store has no salad bar, no coffee station, and no hot food offerings since it is only for putting together online orders for customers. USA Today got an exclusive look inside, and the long aisles, produce coolers, and large freezer make it look more like a fulfillment warehouse than a typical grocery store.

At the height of the pandemic, some Whole Foods locations temporarily shut down and became online-only stores. These stores were located in Bryant Park in New York City, as well as some stores in Chicago, Austin, Texas, and Baltimore. This change was only temporary, though, and these stores have since gone back to their normal hours. This new Whole Foods is meant exclusively for online orders and grocery deliveries and will never be open to the public.

In a time when many individuals are still trying to limit their person-to-person contact—especially when grocery shopping—this new location is a great option for those in the Brooklyn area. The news also follows the opening of Amazon’s first in-person grocery store that features Whole Foods brand products.
