New York’s claim to the shaken and stirred (and a personal favorite) made with American whiskey and Italian vermouth, perked up with a few dashes of aromatic bitters, is not just timeless and tasty, but the very definition of what a cocktail should be.
Historians have debated about the drink’s origin for centuries. Some believe that it was invented at the Manhattan Club for an event with Winston Churchill’s mother—but that’s a tall tale. More recent theories suggest it was a waiter named “Black,” who worked in lower Manhattan in the 1870s. Whichever story you choose to believe The Manhattan Club still lays claim to the ownership of the recipe to this very day and the cocktail is still widely available in bars, restaurants, and cafes throughout the world and is regarded by many bartenders as one of the best cocktails to ever have been served.
The last time we ordered a Manhattan was at 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar, NYC with spectacular views of the Empire State Building. Much as we would love to head to our neighborhood pub and order a couple to beat the summer heat, considering we are still in a state of lockdown, here’s how you can make it at home and embrace virtual happy hours – they are the norm these days as people practice social distancing. Salut!
