Jammu and Kashmir travel advisory: Avalanche warning issued in 4 districts
Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority has said that there is a probability of a ‘low danger level’ avalanche occurring above 3200 to 3500 m above sea level over Kishtwar, Doda, Bandipora and Kupwara districts. The disaster management authority has advised those living in these areas to take necessary precautions and avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas for safety measures till further orders.
As per the latest reports, four vehicles got buried under snow yesterday, following an avalanche near the Zojila pass in Ladakh’s Kargil district. Those inside the vehicles managed to escape unhurt. The avalanche occurred near Shaitani Nallah along the 434-km Srinagar-Leh National Highway.
Heatwave grips parts of India; IMD issues orange alert for West Bengal
The India Meteorological Department Monday issued a heatwave warning for several parts of India, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh. The maximum temperatures will be in the range of 40 to 42 degree Celsius over many parts of the plains of Northwest India and adjoining Madhya Pradesh and East India. IMD said the maximum temperatures are above normal by 3 to 5 degree Celsius over many parts of Northwest, East, and Northeast India.
“In East India, especially the Gangetic West Bengal area has been seeing a heatwave for the past four days. We have issued an orange alert for West Bengal,” said Kumar. Considering the situation, the bus operators in Kolkata decided to reduce the number of services and change the schedules. The bus unions asked the workers to avoid the service between 1 pm and 3:30 pm. West Bengal also ordered the closure of all state-run schools, colleges and universities of West Bengal for a week from April 17 in view of the ongoing heat wave.
El Nino Likely To Strike This Monsoon Season
Contradictory monsoon forecasts have come in ahead of potentially the fifth straight year of normal or above normal rainfall for the country. Private agency Skymet suggested that the rains could be below normal in 2023.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), however, is of the view that normal rains are expected despite El Niño, a weather phenomenon which often results in weaker monsoon. The IMD defines a normal monsoon as one which delivers between 96 and 104 per cent of the 50-year average rainfall for the season. Rainfall has been 0.4-11.8 per cent higher than this average since 2019.
