Did you know pudding actually is the sweet dish which is the final course of the meal in England, what the Americans (and now pretty much the entire English-speaking world) call dessert?
Bread pudding (or bread and butter pudding) was invented as a smart way to use stale bread or toasted bread (instead of throwing it away) with a mixture of milk, eggs, cream and sugar poured over it and baked in a way that creates a soft almost souffle-like sweet dish. One can add raisins or any other fruit for additional flavor. Looks like something that you can rustle up with minimum fuss as a perfectly sweet finish after a hearty hot meal on a weekend when it is too cold for ice cream.
