An Oscar Tour Of The World

Movies are intended to tell a story that inspires, and often they inspire some serious wanderlust. An important part of a movie’s success lies in the filming’s location which contributes significantly to the setting and plot. Movies with interesting locations draw more viewers and add to the realism of the film.
As the 94th Academy Awards are right around the corner, we made a list of all of the Best Picture nominees of 2022 and their respective filming locations, so that you can visit these stunning spots on your next trip.

1. Belfast

Kenneth Branagh’s coming of age chronicles the life of a working-class family and their nine-year-old son amid the tumult of the civil unrest and war in Northern Ireland. The film portrays how an idyllic childhood is interrupted by war seen from the point of view of a young central character.

Belfast was filmed in multiple locations around the U.K. specifically in England and Northern Ireland. Taking into account that the film is set in the capital of Northern Ireland, multiple recognizable spots appear in the film.  Sets for the movie were reportedly built near Longcross Studios, located on Chobham Lane in the town of Chertsey in Surrey, in southeast London.

2. The Power of the Dog

Described as a mesmerizing and astonishing masterpiece, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jane Campion wrote and directed the movie. It is a Western psychological drama film that stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst. The film was entirely shot in New Zealand even though the movie is set in rural Montana. The notable filming locations to visit from The Power of the Dog are Dunedin Railway Station, Tyne and Harbour Streets of Oamaru, Queenstown, Cromwell, and the Hawkdun Ranges area in Central Otago. This year, Power of Dog tops the list of nominees for the 94th Academy Awards, picking up 12 nods, including best picture.

3. West Side Story

Academy Award-winning Steven Spielberg directed this colorful and vibrant Oscar-nominated film. The movie, set in 1957 in New York City, tells a classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love. The film captures the grit and energy of the lively city from Brooklyn and Queens to Harlem and Washington Heights. So as you watch the new film or think back on it, you might recognize these specific NYC filming locations of West Side Story – Brooklyn’s Bush Terminal Piers Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art – The Cloisters, The Church of the Intercession in Washington Heights, and Brooklyn’s Navy Yard.

The New York Public Library for Performing Arts has also organized a virtual tour of all the locations and sets. You can view those here

4. Dune

With a standout cast of actors like Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, and more, Dune has been nominated for ten Oscar nominations! The movie follows Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) who arrives on Arrakis after his father accepts the stewardship of the dangerous planet. Chaos ensues as the family becomes embroiled in a war for control over the galaxy’s most valuable asset.

It was filmed across various locations including Abu Dhabi, Norway, and Budapest. However, the unique location has to be in the stark wilderness of the Wadi Rum in Jordan. It’s not the first time that the Wadi Rum valley of Jordan was used to capture an iconic desert location, as the area has frequently been a filming site for Hollywood productions like Lawrence of Arabia, The Martian and Mission to Mars, Egypt in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to name a few.

5. CODA

Another coming of age drama that received multiple nominations at the 94th Academy Awards, CODA was filmed about an hour northeast of Boston in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The movie tells the story of Ruby Rossi, a teenager who is the only hearing member of her family. Take a walk along Gloucester’s Fish Pier, have a picnic at the former Steel Derrick Quarry, or visit Pratty’s C.A.V. for a drink.

Adam McKay’s science fiction film follows two low-level astronauts, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), who discover an unidentified comet that, as per their calculations, will kill the life on the planet in about six months. The satirical film shows the predicaments faced by the two as they attempt to spread awareness about the comet.

The film was mainly shot in the city of Boston. Visit the South Station the largest railroad station in Greater Boston, tour the Museum of Fine Arts which is the world’s 20th-largest art museum, and have a drink at the Howl at the Moon, a splendid bar located on High Street. .

7. Drive My Car

One of the best-reviewed films of the year, Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s touching movie tells the story of a widowed actor who develops a quiet bond with his driver, a young woman who has experienced as much tragedy as her employer. The movie beautifully shows how time heals, which is just as much the story of Japan as it is of the protagonist.

Much of the film is set in Hiroshima, a city that experienced unfathomable disaster during WW2. It is now a place of extraordinary beauty, nestled along the Seto Inland Sea. Admire the beautiful views on a bike along the coast, visit the moving Peace Memorial Park featured in the film or take a short trip to the tiny Okunoshima Island.
