Dreams do come true at least in Switzerland. It was a scene straight out of a Christmas movie, when chocolate fell from the sky due to a malfunction at the Lindt & Sprüngli factory in the town of Olten.
Residents of the town, between Zurich and Basel, left their houses on Friday morning to find particles of fine cocoa powder falling from the sky. But this was no Willy Wonka-inspired divine intervention: the ventilation system at a nearby chocolate factory had simply malfunctioned.
The Lindt & Spruengli company said a minor defect developed in the cooling ventilation for a line for roasted “cocoa nibs” in its factory in Olten.
The nibs are fragments of crushed cocoa beans that serve as the basis of chocolate. The minor defect, combined with strong winds Friday morning, caused the chocolate powder to spread around the immediate area of the factory.
The Twitter page for the town of Olten shared a photo of a car that had a fine layer of chocolate powder covering it. The firm has offered to pay the cleaning fee for the white car – pictured below – which was covered in the chocolate dust, although the owner has not yet taken them up on the offer.
And we wouldn’t be surprised if we got to know that they were simply licking all that delicious chocolate off themselves. When was the last time high-quality Swiss cocoa actually fell from the sky, after all?
