Ask anyone living in the United Kingdom about a classic and comforting winter warmer. They will unanimously name Shepherd’s pie (Irish) or Cottage Pie (English) – a hot and savory dish reminiscent of a casserole, consisting of minced lamb or other meat, onions, carrots, Worcestershire sauce, thick gravy, and seasonings such as marjoram, parsley, and black pepper. All of the ingredients are placed under a roof of buttery, creamy mashed potatoes, and baked in an oven until the pie is ready for consumption. This simple delicacy was invented by shepherds in 18th century England and Scotland. The Shepherd’s pie became extremely popular in the 1870s, and not by coincidence, as mincing machines became widely available to the public in those years.
Of all the ways of using leftover meat, this potato-topped pie must be the most enduring, though these days it is more often made with fresh mince. In case you are vegetarian, then you could replace the meat mince with soya mince and it tastes just as good (trust us, we’ve tried it). This hearty pie is not only a favorite in restaurants throughout the United Kingdom but also in restaurants around the world that specialize in British Cuisine.
