It’s amazing how many pies have become, over the years, national icons of at least one country (sometimes more than once, as in this case).
The meat pie is very simple to make and very portable, thereby making it the ideal food item to carry with you to work or for a picnic. In fact, it started out as being popular in the old days with miners and farmers and anybody who could not leave work for a meal. It’s the original ‘working lunch’ and gradually became a popular dish with all classes of people in that country.
It consists of diced or minced meat in the Aussie /NZ version, Worcestershire sauce, onions, mushrooms, cheese, and eggs covered in pastry sheets and baked. It is usually served with ketchup. While it can be eaten at any temperature, it tastes best when it is hot out of the oven on a cold winter afternoon. Go ahead, try it out!
